How long have you been refinishing furniture?
I Began in 2012 part-time and then went full time in July of 2015.
Tell us how you got started?
It all began with the idea of having a mustard yellow buffet! My husband couldn’t see the big picture and thought I had lost my mind, but I wanted a piece of furniture that didn’t match anything in my house and I wanted it to be in my front foyer. I had a huge desire to upcycle furniture for my home without spending a lot of money and because it had to be mustard I purchased a French dresser at a garage sale and decided to paint it myself. I had always been good at re-using items and making them look different and new. Although they had been at home forever, I thought...WHY NOT make a $20 find into something special! The mustard buffet was created and it became the start of many conversations with my friends and everyone who came to my house. Years later that $20 turned into $250 when I sold it and the rest is history.
Do you refinish for personal use or do you sell?
I sell. Actually, doing pieces for myself it’s almost impossible, Ha Ha! I have a retail space in an Unique Gifts Mall and sell on Marketplace, Etsy and my social media sites.
Do you have a favorite furniture style that you like to refinish?
I have to say my favorite piece is always the one in front of me!; but personally, I love Jacobean and Duncan Phyfe styles; they are ornate and well made and whether painted or stripped have beautiful woods that aren’t made any longer but last forever if you are lucky enough to own them.
What paint medium is your favorite?
Each piece requires a different medium depending on the style I am going for so I adapt to the needs of the piece. Currently I find myself using Dixie Belle Paint in both their lines (chalk & mineral based), MUD Paint (Clay based), The Chippy Barn (ceramic based) and Melange Paints (mineral based); all these work with my creative style the best and I love them equally.
Do you have a favorite piece you've refinished and why?
Gosh, this is a very hard question to answer. I love every piece I create, so I will show you my favorite piece that I kept. My husband and I saved this beauty from a plantation in Louisiana and had it in our home unpainted for over 2 years. I finally found the perfect green color to make it shine again, and she now adorns my home. I think this one will truly be the one I never sell!
Overall, not exclusive to furniture refinishing, what is your favorite color?
Green and black 50/50.
When you aren't refinishing furniture what do you enjoy doing?
Traveling and Junking!
Do you have any tips you would like to share?
Believe in yourself.
Decide if this is a hobby or a business and either way give it 200%. If you go for the latter, make it legal so you can also reap the benefits of owning a business.
Surround yourself with people who will support you and create your tribe.
Tools...you’ll need them!. When you buy cheap, you buy twice...so go for the best you can afford.
Do you have a favorite Zibra Paintbrush and why?
Round and square are my go-to for sure!
