How long have you been refinishing furniture
3 years.
Tell us how you got started?
It started with 3 tequila shots and then walking through our local thrift store. Seeing all the furniture in there had my head in a creative spin! We left, but only after embarrassing my husband by saying (loudly) “wouldn’t it be great if I painted this and gave it a new lease on life?” The next day I went and bought some chalk paint from a big name store and hauled my sofa table outside to try it out! I fell in love with how relaxed it made me feel and seeing the end result left me craving more!
Do you refinish for personal use or do you sell?
I refinish to sell mostly. Although a lot of pieces find their way into our home...(Furniture can be sneaky like that). However, I started off by refinishing pieces around our home just to see if I was any good at it. I posted my first piece for sale in 2017 (and probably priced it way to low), but received a lot of positive feedback! It continued on from there with many more pieces and eventually custom work!
Do you have a favorite furniture style that you like to refinish?
Definitely Farmhouse style. Old antique pieces pull on my heart strings...the ones with lots of character marks that tell a 100+ year old story. Milk paint is my favorite go to for farmhouse pieces.
What paint medium is your favorite?
I have two actually! I started out with Fusion Mineral paint which is a 100% acrylic based paint. The coverage and built in top coat is unbeatable! I also LOVE The Chippy Barn Amulent paint. It is a ceramic based paint with self leveling properties that are out of this world! The durability is also amazing!
Do you have a favorite piece you've refinished and why?
I’d have to say my favorite piece is the Broyhill Brasília I painted in Eucalyptus by The Chippy Barn. I purchased the piece from a local artist I admire (Amanda from Uturn Designs), and it won the Best MCM category in the 2019 Zibra Golden Brush Awards. How special!
Overall, not exclusive to furniture refinishing, what is your favorite color?
I’m captivated by deep, moody greens like teal and evergreen. They’re bold, yet serine.
When you aren't refinishing furniture what do you enjoy doing?
I always love interior projects around the home...and since I recently found out that I am going to be a mom, I’ve been thoroughly enjoying designing my son’s nursery.
Do you have any tips you would like to share?
Yes! Not knowing, making mistakes, and failure...it’s all part of the process. No one knows how to professionally refinish furniture overnight. Set the bar high for yourself, work with gumption, be persistent and have patience...that’s the way to mastering anything.
Do you have a favorite Zibra Paintbrush and why?
Yes!! The palm pro and 2" chiseled wedge are my favorites, although they are soooo soft I slmost hate putting paint on them.
